This is mainly due to the inherent ability of the material to maintain its structural and molecular integrity when exposed to high temperatures. Graphite has a very high melting point. Technically, it doesn't melt, but it sublimates to a gas at a certain amount of atmospheric pressure. Graphite has good heat transfer and the smallest expansion after heating.
